“I’m proud that my daughter is bilingual,” said Erica, a mom who attends Intercambio. “But sometimes, I feel it puts too much pressure on her, especially in business situations where she really can’t understand what’s going on. And sometimes I’m not sure if I’m getting the whole message.”

It is not uncommon for a newcomer to the US to depend on a young son or daughter to translate, or explain words and even cultural differences, explained Dana Deane, client care specialist. “It reminds me of when I lived in Russia. Going to the post office or buying shampoo were no longer simple chores, but day-long activities that required others’ help. Where is shampoo sold? Why does the bottle look the same as dishwashing soap?“

Through Intercambio (Spanish) and ESL (Russian) Mother & Child helps mothers learn English and cultural nuances. Moms become more confident as they are able to speak for themselves in public. And it removes a burden from their small children. “Everything is a little more clear to me now that I can speak some English.”
